The store began in 1917 and was run by William Barnes and Clifford Noble in New York city. It was originated by Williams father Charles in 1873 when he first opened his printing business in Wheaton Illinois. During the depression, the store was moved from its original location and grew roots in their 18th St. and Fifth Ave. location.
In the 1980s the company was expanding and also bought out the B. Dalton bookstores that were mainly found in shopping malls all around the country, turning Barnes & Noble into a nationwide franchise. In 1999 they were named as the 2nd largest retailer of books in America Barnes & Nobles locations. There are some critics that claim that they have caused the ruin of independent and local book retailers.

Online Sales

Before the internet and the ability to sell their books online, customers were receiving their books through mail order. The retailer did manage to sell some books online starting in the Easy 80s but their own website was launched in May of 1997.  Now when you shop online you will find a list of over 1 million books to choose from. Barnes & Noble does not only sell books, they have published their own and also have an in-house editing staff that they use when they acquire copyrights to other titles that are both from the US and outside.

The Barnes & Noble Classic collection was released during the 1990s through 2003 and offered classic literary arts for children and adults. They were available in hardcover making them coveted by customers all over the US. In 2003 the same books were again offered but this time they could be found in paperback also.
